In this retelling of the Iliad, Miller tells the story from Patroclus’ point of view, an exiled prince sent to live with Achilles and his father in Phthia. Miller explores the relationship between the two young princes and what grows into much more than friendship. They grow up together and eventually follow each other into war. It’s such a beautiful story and one of my favourite Iliad retellings so far.
.
I had read The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker and it painted Achilles in a very different light - he was entitled and selfish so it took me a while to familiarise myself with Miller’s Achilles who was almost innocent at the beginning and very sweet natured as a boy. Telling the story from Patroclus’ view was brilliant. His love for Achilles overpowers everything he does and so we read and experience events through Patroclus’ rose tinted glasses which is such a rare experience.
